The stupidity of some of the comments found on slashdot never ceases to amaze me, especially considering nerds are supposed to be of above average intelligence.
This is a complex issue and I doubt any of us are qualified or have enough information to really comment fully on it, i'm sure there is much information that is excluded from this and the that the public will never know.
There are no pictures of the scene here, or the road layout, or the route the driver was taking, its very hard to make big judgements based solely on text.
I don't think the driver knew there would be a road block there, and the troops guarding it didn't know the Italians were coming.
To me it justs seems like another tragic incident caused by trigger happy US soldiers which could have been averted if the Italians had communicated properly that they were coming.
What annoys me is the way some people try to put the man who died's actions down because they paid a ransom, (somehow I think people would be making less comments about funding terrorism if it was their mother or father about to be beheaded) the guy lost his life taking bullets meant for someone else which should be an admirable quality whatever country you come from.
