Comment Re:Ownership may fade in the short term (Score 1) 390

Hypothetical situation, but what happens to the stuff you own when the format becomes obsolete? Although I'm sure it will be quite some time. In *theory* these media are supposed to be copy protected so you can't transfer them from one format to another. One could say you don't really own what you have right now, even though you have it "in hand".

Scientists Discover Booze That Won't Give You a Hangover 334

Kwang-il Kwon and Hye Gwang Jeong of Chungnam National University have discovered that drinking alcohol with oxygen bubbles added leads to fewer hangovers and a shorter sobering up time. People drinking the bubbly booze sobered up 20-30 minutes faster and had less severe and fewer hangovers than people who drank the non-fizzy stuff. Kwon said: "The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage reduces plasma alcohol concentrations faster than a normal dissolved-oxygen alcohol beverage does. This could provide both clinical and real-life significance. The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage would allow individuals to become sober faster, and reduce the side effects of acetaldehyde without a significant difference in alcohol's effects. Furthermore, the reduced time to a lower BAC may reduce alcohol-related accidents."

The Perfect Way To Slice a Pizza 282

iamapizza writes "New Scientist reports on the quest of two math boffins for the perfect way to slice a pizza. It's an interesting and in-depth article; 'The problem that bothered them was this. Suppose the harried waiter cuts the pizza off-center, but with all the edge-to-edge cuts crossing at a single point, and with the same angle between adjacent cuts. The off-center cuts mean the slices will not all be the same size, so if two people take turns to take neighboring slices, will they get equal shares by the time they have gone right round the pizza — and if not, who will get more?' This is useful, of course, if you're familiar with the concept of 'sharing' a pizza."

Comment Good for IBM/Sun - bad for enterprise IT? (Score 1) 526

I'll admit - I like Sun gear. I've worked with it a lot and for the most part has been rock solid and performs well at an enterprise level. They've had their ups and downs but I feel they've been a positive player in IT.

I can't help but feel that this is ultimately going to be a bad thing for the IT industry, especially with enterprise IT. IMHO there will always be a need for big iron servers: commodity hardware does not necessarily scale well for all applications.

Competition is good for the IT industry. Take away yet another place and your choices are further diminished. Sun have done a lot of good work with SPARC, especially recently. What happens when the only choices in CPU technologies are x86 and PPC?

I've spent considerable time trying to get this work and it is still nowhere near being mature enough to be usable.

Don't get me wrong, it's better than it was a few months ago. It will allow Evolution to make a connection and even download most of the folder information. For us, it has trouble deciphering email addresses in the headers, doesn't display some messages at all and, most annoyingly, continues to consume all available memory until it crashes.

DSS/HIPPA/SOX Unalterable Audit Logs? 381

analogrithems writes "Recently I was asked by one of the suits in my company to come up with a method to comply with the new PCI DSS policy that requires companies to have write once, read many logs. In short the requirement is for a secure method to make sure that once a log is written it can never be deleted or changed. So far I've only been able to find commercial and hardware-based solutions. I would prefer to use an open source solution. I know this policy is already part of HIPPA and soon to be part of SOX. It seems like there ought to be a way to do this with cryptography and checksums to ensure authenticity. Has anyone seen or developed such a solution? Or how have you made compliance?"
