New Font Uses Holes To Cut Ink Use 540

An anonymous reader writes "A Dutch company has taken an open source Sans Serif font and added holes to it to try and save on printer ink costs. The Ecofont is claimed to save up to 20 percent of ink costs, but it allegedly took the firm a while to perfect the ratio of the maximum number of holes possible without sacrificing readability."

2008 Mozilla Summit Affected By Rock Slide 84

An anonymous reader writes "The recently concluded 2008 Mozilla Summit, held in Whistler, Canada, was impacted by a rock slide that cut off the main highway between Whistler and Vancouver, where most attendees planned to depart via airplane. In true open-source fashion, summit attendees collaborated on a solution, opening a Bugzilla bug (severity: "blocker"), posting crash dumps, and proposing solutions, including chartering a flight (which would land first in TRUNK, then BRANCH). Eventually, attendees settled on a workaround which seems to have been successful. For next year's summit, organizers might want to consider a location with more redundancy."

I agree. For most things I try to buy cheap used copies from Amazon. A very good quality CD can be had for $3-$6 (plus shipping) and I get to rip it at my preferred bit rate. I'll still buy new albums from bands I really like brand new though.

Like others have said, the physical copy is a backup. Also, I bought six of those wooden CD boxes from IKEA ("Mackis") and loads of cheap plastic sleeves from someplace online for pennies on the dollar, and then spent a few days breaking down the jewel cases and putting all the artwork and the disc into the sleeves. My collection isn't quite as browse-able as it was before, but the space savings have been worth it.

As an aside, I wonder if the opening of the new movie service will lead to an increase in the default bit rate of the music sold on the iTMS. I assume 128 was chosen partially for download speed concerns and we know that movies were delayed partially until more people had broadband connections. Does the green light for movie downloads signal a better chance for better bit rates for music?

It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
