Enron's Kenneth Lay Dies 868

Don420 writes "This morning the biggest corporate criminal in modern history, Kenneth Lay, died of a massive coronary before he could receive his sentence. Lay was found guilty of being in charge of the scheme that had many lose their live-savings through a scheme of complex offshore holdings and is to thank for our having to live with Sarbanes-Oxely." From the article: "Enron filed for bankruptcy in December 2001 after investigators found it had used partnerships to conceal more than $1 billion in debt and inflate profits. Enron's downfall cost 4,000 employees their jobs and many of them their life savings, and led to billions of dollars of losses for investors."

U.S. Government Intervenes in EFF vs. AT&T 463

An anonymous reader writes "Reuters is reporting that the US government has 'filed a motion on Saturday to intervene and seek dismissal of a lawsuit by a civil liberties group against AT&T Inc. over a federal program to monitor U.S. communications.' More from the article: " In its motion seeking intervention, posted on the court's Web site, the government said the interests of the parties in the lawsuit "may well be in the disclosure of state secrets" in their effort to present their claims or defenses ... A hearing is scheduled for June 21 before federal Judge Vaughn Walker." You may recall a few weeks ago when the DOJ asked the judge to dismiss the case. They've now taken the next step required to quash this legal action.

Comment What about food products? (Score 1) 325

If these things are so small what's to stop them from using them in actual food items? It would work in the same manner taggants work in explosives in the US. I donâ(TM)t like the sound of these things but, It might be useful if you had food allergies and went in for allergic medical care. Hell they could probably track you last meal(s) to find out if you had something you werenâ(TM)t supposed to.

And what about passing these things out in your waste (assuming they survive the digestive system)? Seems like they could be picked up, much like how seeds are passed through animals and deposited miles away from the parent plant. Then whoâ(TM)s to say they actually "belong" to you and just not along for the ride somehow.

Or what about recycled products? Would they also contain a chip that would be passed on to the next item, so that it may read: âoeI am a Pepsi bottleâ and âoeI am (now) a milk container?â

Seems like after a while there would be too much noise from unrelated chips.
