Journal Journal: My conversion to Linux, part 1; the begining
Somewhere this year I decided to switch over my two PC's to Linux. In this journal I will log how this process is/was going. And what is still an issue for me, or report my latest success stories
Why
W2K had been very stable on my PC's. I am able to crash almost any computer. This is not to show off, but the sad thruth. Despite this ability I had almost no crashes! But I felt not in control over my Machines. Also all the viruses and worms on windows boxes got me worried. I never had a virus, I did check my PC before I switched, but I did not check for spy ware etc.
Technical details
Just for the geeks a summary of the HW, so that you can anticipate the problems I will run into
1) Pentium 3, 733MHz (running @800MHz) coppermine processor with 756Mbyte RAM, 19" CRT, G400, Nikon Coolscan III, epson photo 1650, epson photo 1280, promise FT100 with 2 30G maxtor disks, 1 CDRW drive
2) Pentium 4, 2.4GHz, 800MHz FSB (=200MHz), 512 MHz DDR, internal graphic card. SL-B8E-F mother board with Intel 865G + ICH5, 2 DVD drives, 120G HD
Download and Install
First I downloaded MDK10 which took me a few days. And started to install it on the newest PC. The whole process went very well and simple. Bascily I found it a good install process.
Graphics resolution
The first issue I run into was the internal graphics. It did not want to run with higher resolutions. Until I found out on the net that I had to change my BIOS settings to reserve memory for the 'card'. After this, it worked fine. (Not as sharp as the G400 card on the same monitor).
ADSL modem
Second issue was the ADSL modem. The RPMS for the Sagem800 USB modem was not included on the 3 CDs I downloaded. After installing the software I was unable to get it working. One moment I decided to switch of Shorewall (firewall) and I was connected!
In a next entry I will comeback on Shorewall and the conversion of the other PC.
