Iâ(TM)m missing something... the river is constantly flowing right? So rather than pump water back, just donâ(TM)t let water through in the first place. Unless of course youâ(TM)re talking about shutting off the river completely and running it backwards, in which case, where is the water coming from? A big pipe from the next lake? Any environmental problems with letting the river bed go dry?

For trivial academic problems that nobody really cares about, yes. For hard problems in real world situations that real people care about paying money for, no. UML and its kind are good for documenting a simplified slice of a complex system so engineers can understand the requirements and start writing real code. But to be precise enough to generate code, well, you might as well just write code.

"think they need 800 ft-lbs of torque even though they rarely haul anything" Yeah, well the key there is that they do haul things. Ever tried hauling a 6-ton horse trailer with a sedan? That's an exercise in futility, no matter how rarely you try. You *need* torque to move it, strong springs to hold the tongue weight, and mass to control it.
