Submission + - Non-US made WiFi Routers Banned by FCC (pcmag.com)

phatrabt writes: The FCC has now banned any WiFi routers not made in the US from being sold unless granted a waiver from the Pentagon or Homeland Security. PC Mag says:

"Late on Monday afternoon, the FCC announced the order, based on a White House determination that foreign-made routers introduce “supply chain vulnerabilities” that hackers and cyberspies can exploit. Specifically, the commission updated its “covered list,” which acts as a blacklist of telecom equipment deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to US national security. It now includes “all consumer-grade routers produced in foreign countries.”

However, the FCC stresses, “This action does not affect any previously purchased consumer-grade routers. Consumers can continue to use any router they have already lawfully purchased or acquired.”

“Nor does it prevent retailers from continuing to sell, import, or market router models approved previously through the FCC’s equipment authorization process,” the commission adds.

Submission + - DOGE Is Planning a Hackathon at the IRS. It Wants Easier Access to Taxpayer Data (wired.com)

echo123 writes: DOGE operatives have repeatedly referred to the software company Palantir as a possible partner in creating a “mega API” at the IRS, sources tell WIRED. Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has plans to stage a “hackathon” next week in Washington, DC. The goal is to create a single “mega API”—a bridge that lets software systems talk to one another—for accessing IRS data, sources tell WIRED. The agency is expected to partner with a third-party vendor to manage certain aspects of the data project. Palantir, a software company cofounded by billionaire and Musk associate Peter Thiel, has been brought up consistently by DOGE representatives as a possible candidate, sources tell WIRED.

Two top DOGE operatives at the IRS, Sam Corcos and Gavin Kliger, are helping to orchestrate the hackathon, sources tell WIRED. Corcos is a health-tech CEO with ties to Musk’s SpaceX. Kliger attended UC Berkeley until 2020 and worked at the AI company Databricks before joining DOGE as a special adviser to the director at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Corcos is also a special adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Since joining Musk’s DOGE, Corcos has told IRS workers that he wants to pause all engineering work and cancel current attempts to modernize the agency’s systems, according to sources with direct knowledge who spoke with WIRED. He has also spoken about some aspects of these cuts publicly: "We've so far stopped work and cut about $1.5 billion from the modernization budget. Mostly projects that were going to continue to put us down the death spiral of complexity in our code base," Corcos told Laura Ingraham on Fox News in March.

So did I until recently. I just decided to stay off the major version update bandwagon at US$80 a pop. Bought a copy for Vista? Doesn't work correctly in Win7, and if you want a version that works correctly that's another $80. Got your Win7 copy? Oops, Win8 is out, need a new version for that too! I switched to Q-Dir (free) and while it's not the powerhouse that DO is it does what I need.

I fell your pain! It's the main reason that I don't use Linux. Before I get flamed, yes I know that it isn't entirely Ubuntu's fault since they have to depend on third party drivers which don't seem to work very well, but that shouldn't be my problem. I've used a few different flavors of Linux on different machines and I like it, but overall I still like Windows.

It's funny you mention the LJ1100. I have an LJ1100A (with the scanner installed) and it still runs. Main things that are wrong is that I have to have the separation pad replaced a few years ago (courtesy of HP) and now the scanner double feeds (nor can I find software for WinXP for the scanner). You have a suggestion for the scanner? Oh, one other thing, I also have a HP 7310. How do you feel about those?
