4chan Declares War On Snow 201

With all the recent hacktivism in the news, Anonymous has decided to take on a new and powerful enemy: snow. On Sunday the group announced that it will "do everything in its power to shut snow down by attacking the Weather Channel and North Face websites, boycotting outerwear, and voting for the sun as Time’s 2010 Person Of The Year." I'm sure there are a lot of people in Minneapolis right now that would wish them luck.

Man Fined $1.5 Million For Leaked Mario Game 287

An anonymous reader writes "A Queensland man will have to pay Nintendo $1.5 million in damages after illegally copying and uploading one of its recent games to the internet ahead of its release, the gaming giant says. Nintendo said the loss was caused when James Burt made New Super Mario Bros Wii available for illegal download a week ahead of its official Australian release in November of last year. Nintendo applied for and was granted a search order by the Federal Court, forcing Burt to disclose the whereabouts of all his computers, disks and electronic storage devices in November. He was also ordered to allow access, including passwords, to his social networking sites, email accounts and websites."

Forrester Says Tech Downturn Is "Unofficially Over" 130

alphadogg writes "The US IT market will grow by 6.6% as high-tech spending rebounds in 2010, according to Forrester Research's latest estimates. The research firm based its projections on data reported for 2009, though its fourth quarter numbers are incomplete. Forrester says hints of a recovery surfaced in the third quarter, and now the company expects the global IT market to grow by 8.1% in 2010. Forrester's US and Global IT Market Outlook: Q4 2009 reads: 'The tech downturn of 2008 and 2009 is unofficially over, while the Q3 2009 data for the US and the global market showed continued declines in tech purchases (as we expected). We predict that the Q4 2009 data will show a small increase in buying activity, or at worst, just a small decline.'"

Infinity Ward Fights Against Modern Warfare 2 Cheaters 203

Faithbleed writes "IW's Robert Bowling reports on his twitter account that Infinity Ward is giving 2,500 Modern Warfare 2 cheaters the boot. The news comes as the war between IW and MW2's fans rages over the decision to go with IWnet hosting instead of dedicated servers. Unhappy players were quick to come up with hacks that would allow their own servers and various other changes." Despite the dedicated-server complaints, Modern Warfare 2 has sold ridiculously well.

Intel's Nehalem EX To Gain Error Correction 80

angry tapir writes "Intel's eight-core Nehalem EX server processor will include a technology derived from its high-end Itanium chips that helps to reduce data corruption and ensure reliable server performance. The processor will include an error correction feature called MCA Recovery, which will detect and fix errors that could otherwise cause systems to crash — it will be able to detect system errors originating in the CPU or system memory and work with the operating system to correct them." Update: 05/27 19:11 GMT by T : Dave Altavilla suggests also Hot Hardware's coverage of the new chip, which includes quite a bit more information.

Feed Penny Arcade: News: On PAX (And Also Packs) (penny-arcade.com)

Tycho: This is the comic that we drew - well, that Gabe drew, from my flawless transcription - upon the storied stage at PAX 2007. I'm proud of him, actually - he braved the tabletop floor in search of a game, a Gabriel first. Let me also relate with some pride that he now keeps his cards in a sealed deckbox. When he begins playing with a fully sleeved deck, know this: tears will flow. You might have heard that Wil Wheaton's keynote was an incredible and life-affirming experience, but you need not shiver in the cold darkness out beyond the rays of his healing light. You can simply download it and make this sort of determination for yourself. It's straight out of the board, so it sounds pretty nice. We have these for the bands, too. We'll find out what they're okay with as far as distribution goes. Communicating PAX would be quite impossible. If you were there, you know - and if you weren't there, I'm certain you'd prefer to hear about something else. I'm afraid I'll be unable to satisfy the last group, as these posts are typically my recovery process. My consciousness is still tumbling down some theoretical neon helix. As evidence of this, I submit that last fucking sentence. For last year's secret round of the Omegathon, we chose Tetris - it's elemental gameplay, which is a virtue we like to uphold in that round, but we found the one guy in the entire universe who had never played Tetris. This year, when Frankie offered up Bungie's full support of the event, we realized fairly quickly that we had a startling opportunity here. Then, in the space of a week, we commissioned the Minibosses to deliver a trademark version of the Halo 3 theme over Cortana's chilling rampancy. Neither MNC Dover or Accolon were especially familiar with Halo, another statistical impossibility, but this might have been for the best - they were doing battle on never seen before maps, each of them tuned in Forge to have piles of big guns jammed into every crevice. To quote Bungie's Lukems, this was Halo: Hyper Fighting Edition. Accolon eventually took it, but our competitors definitely delivered the required spectacle. We were asked if we had largely become figureheads at the event, as its size has grown beyond all reasonability - and we gladly answered in the affirmative. It would be impossible for us to create something like this by ourselves, and we're not good at it anyway, so it would almost certainly be a disaster. We simply provide the rallying point, with the full knowledge that we are not necessary or even desirable. We know where the strength actually lies - in the profound vigor of gamers' participation culture. Could we ask for any better? To inaugurate, and then recede? To appear at holidays of state in our regalia, to christen the newly born? Give me this, above all else: to serve you, in my way, and then to turn, and be gone.

Feed Techdirt: iPhone Supposedly Gets Unlocked, ATT Apparently Freaks Out (techdirt.com)

There were several reports last week that the operator lock on the iPhone had been broken, meaning that people might be able to use the device with service from a company other than ATT. The first to emerge was from a New Jersey teenager, who came up with a complex method involving soldering and software; then two separate companies later said they had software-only unlocking methods. To be sure, these unlocking methods and services will only ever appeal to a small number of users, as most general consumers won't really care, or won't want to go to the trouble. With that in mind, it really doesn't seem like ATT has much at stake financially, but that apparently hasn't stopped its lawyers from threatening one of the software providers. The company claims it got a call from a law firm representing the company, tossing around things like copyright infringement and "illegal software dissemination" in what appears to be an attempt at intimidating the company to keep them from releasing the software (particularly since the DMCA doesn't cover phone unlocking). It's worth reiterating that these are supposedly ATT's lawyers, not Apple's -- but it's not clear what standing ATT would have to sue, making this look like little more than a SLAPP situation. Apple's remained quiet on the matter, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the company close the loophole or re-lock the phones with one of its software updates, since it has a financial stake in iPhone buyers activating and using their phones on ATT thanks to its revenue-sharing deal with the operator. Of course, it could take the more enlightened view that it doesn't want to frustrate and annoy the customers who would go to the trouble of unlocking their iPhones -- but if it were going to do that, it wouldn't have locked the device to ATT in the first place.

Feed Court Tells TorrentSpy It Needs To Spy On Users (techdirt.com)

Popular BitTorrent search engine TorrentSpy was told by a federal judge on May 29th that it needed to keep log files of user activity on its site, even if there was no business reason for it. TorrentSpy is nothing more than a specialized search engine, but the entertainment industry wants to paint it as something worse. This latest ruling comes out of a lawsuit between TorrentSpy and the MPAA over the legality of TorrentSpy's search engine. However, the ruling really is extraordinary in many ways. Rather than asking a company to hand over previous records, the court is actually asking TorrentSpy to purposely create new records that it has no need for and hand them over to a private party (the MPAA). What's worse is that this directly contradicts TorrentSpy's own privacy policy -- so obeying the court order would open them up additional legal trouble. TorrentSpy hasn't started spying on users and is appealing the ruling instead (and its lawyer suggests the site would sooner shut down than follow the court order). Hopefully, the appeals court will recognize that requiring a site to specifically create new records (in violation of its own policies) and then handing them over to another entity in an ongoing trial is not a good idea.
