Comment Home user addresses are usually not fixed (Score 1) 60

Many, perhaps most home users do not have a fixed IP address. Over time, for one reason or another, their ISP will assign them a different address. My Verizon Fios address typically changes every few months. So for those users, the list will become more and more out-of-date over time.

I'll take the one that is $100 cheaper and replaces the internal computer with a bunch of HDMI ports.

Sadly, it doesn't work that way. The dumb TVs are low-end models that have only basic features. If you want features like extra ports, a better quality panel, a full set of adjustments to calibrate the display, TVs in that range will also have the "smart" feature. That's ok for me as long as it works normally as a monitor when it's not connected to the Internet.

Also, if you want to build a computer, where else do you go?

Amazon.com. The last time I built a computer, Amazon had nearly all the parts I needed at the same prices, including all the expensive parts. Amazon has a much better return policy. I've been avoiding Newegg since they required me to pay shipping to return a DOA power supply. It was heavy and I had to ship it from Boston to California. Amazon would have provided a prepaid shipping label at no cost.

The problem with the iMac is that it has no expandability. You can't add a second hard drive, second optical drive, and especially can't add any PCI cards. A serious user of Final Cut Pro most likely does need one or more supporting video PCI cards. Expandability like that which is common in PCs shouldn't require the premium price of a Mac Pro.

Cell Phone Interception At Def Con 95

ChrisPaget writes "I'm planning a pretty significant demonstration of GSM insecurity at Defcon next week, where I'll intercept and record cellular calls made by my attendees, live on-stage, no user-input required. As you can imagine, intercepting cellphones is a Very Big Deal in the eyes of the law; this blog post is an attempt to reassure everyone that their privacy is being taken seriously despite the nature of the demo. I'm not just making it up either — the EFF have helped significantly with the details."

The conclusion of the article is significant: "The only person to get all four tracks right is someone who listens to their headphones at pitifully low volumes and hasn't attended any rock concerts. We can think of two explanations. One, the subject has particularly sensitive ears, so doesn't need to turn the volume up high. Two, the subject hasn't wrecked their hearing through years of listening to a walkman/MP3 player at high volumes and/or seeing Motorhead at the Hammersmith Odeon. Arguably, both apply." From my experience, impaired hearing from concerts or loud headphone volumes is much more likely. Also, the age of the listener matters, since it is well-known that the ability to hear high frequencies diminishes with age.

You could be right, given this Business Week story: http://www.businessweek.com/technology/ByteOfTheApple/blog/archives/2008/12/steve_jobs_will.html?campaign_id=rss_blog_byteoftheapple IDG basically pre-announced Steve Jobs giving the keynote, and that kind of behavior has always resulted in retaliation by Steve Jobs.

Submission + - World's Thinnest Laptop

aalobode writes: According to a new Business Week Article, Intel has developed a new, ultra-thin (as thin as a Razr) laptop designed as a fashion accessory, with looks and function both taken into account. From the article: The result, code-named Intel mobile Metro notebook, is less than 0.7 inches thick — about one-quarter of an inch thicker than Motorola's (MOT) iconic cell phone, making it the world's thinnest notebook. And at 2.25 pounds, it's also one of the lightest small-sized portable computers. Other features include always-on Internet connectivity via various wireless technologies.
