Journal perfessor multigeek's Journal: Some new NEDcats 25

Moving back to substance from this whole naming silliness, I've been doing a passel of cleaning up and link-adding in my copy of the db, which has further stretched the cat list. A copy is below. Suggestions are, of course welcome.
One particular question: I've seen several spellings of Krone's Disease out there. Which one is proper?

I would appreciate your votes for ten cats to remove on grounds of redundancy.

Also, I've now got the URL db up to around seventeen hundred entries with most of the dupes gone and significantly more of the fields filled in and links checked. I've sent out copies to those who can get it by email (hotmail and excite acounts are rejecting it) and would, as always, be more then glad to send copies to anybody else who asks.

Just to help get things up and running, I'll have downloads up at www.reedandwright.com by the end of this week, with the DBFs, some screenshots, and a text doc of the cat and site type lists. In another week, probably also a .pdf of some of what we've talked about here.
If I get it set up right, the URL DB and perhaps a few others will be live as non-modifiable databases on R&W as well.

I do have to spend *some* time working to make money so please be patient with my newbie db-hosting fumblings.

Thanks,

Rustin

  • Well, gee, let me think about this. HMmmmm.

Could in be "Chron's". I'm pretty sure anyway. And what kinda question is that? A bait Craig into more posts, question, or do you not actaully know. And why do you need to know, do you have links to Chron's sites? I do know it is not a "K".

Anyway, the truth is I've had MDs stumped on this. I could call Mom and ask her, she's the expert in the family. (Also, the source, but hey, win some, lose some. 'Sides, I did get good hair and lots of smarts.)

    On the topic of
    • Actually, Craig, it could just be (hmmm) that you're not the only one with reason to know this. In fact, for one, a friend of our here in New York with the initials JP has now had a family member give her reason to learn this, which is deeply shitty but there it is.

Yes, I do have at least one link for which it applies. Since I now know four people who either have it or have loved ones who have it, I sure plan to treat knowledge of it as a high priority.

But it is more then that.

I have been doing a bit
      • One, nice to know that it's not just me. It is here except for Mom.

Two, I'd run with the current spelling.

As for the bet, i do believe that we're on the 2 train on our way back from Chinatown or maybe it was Little Odessa, but you bet me $20 that by Oct 2001 there would be on the Net an online live translation service/s. I believe the word was comprehesive. Ring any bells, I have to hunt down the actual paper, it around somewhere.

Also, re: logs and these posts as. Perhaps thats why David was so uptight a
        • That conversation does sound familiar. Guess that I blew it again. I do indeed owe you $20. I'll give it to you when you reach NYC in a few weeks.

BTW, folks, wouldn't that be great? A web site where for, say, two bucks, you could register a bet?
"Zorch bets Foo that by blah date the Cubs will have won the pennent"
Then on that date the parties to the bet and any chosen witnesses get a followup email.
Let customers choose whether or not their bets are public. Use the NED cat system to set up sections and
  • Wow, am I glad I just bought the Graphire2. Praise be the scroll wheel.

Just, wow. I'd forgotten that those bloody cats were pages of paper long.

Got a question for ya. Are you 1) saving all these posts, and 2) does SciTech.Simulation cover such things as SF in general and Cyberpunk (Which is turning out to be so true in some ways. I always said the old cliché "It's a nice place to visit, but I don't want to live there." Whoops, too late.) None the less, the genre has some interesting things to say abo
    • Craig,

But Slashdot is saving these posts. Don't you trust them?
Actually, I am saving some of this but haven't put it in any order yet. If you were up for downloading all the threads and putting them in some sort of rough order (perhaps by the seven subjects I mentioned in my last post), that would be a very nice thing to do.

As for SF/Cyberpunk, I mostly had thought of them as living within Content.Genre.SpeculativeFiction which, now that I look at it, really should be ...Fiction.Speculative, getting mor
      • Below is the aforementioned raw data. No I don't trust /., I lived in NYC, that kinda killed me on trusting big orgs. That and /. isn't really /. anymore in some ways because they got bought out as I recall. By a big corp. I'll see what I can do, but where do I start, and what seven cats? Did I miss something?

        Anyway, Laterness.

        ***Begin raw input********
Number one. You suck, Rustin. I am putting this post together in TextEdit. That's right in order to deal with this mess of cats you posted, I have to have
        • You do realise that these cats may end up being fluid. Each new version might have a "Reed Me" of the new cats and old one that got removed and why.

          Just a quick thought.
        • I'm actually a bit uncomfortable at the entire Art... set. In what way exactly does it get differentiated from Content...?
That having been said, given that there is an Art... range at all, "conceptual art" is a formal, particular category.

Now, I've never formally studied this stuff, but I'll take my shot at a definition. Let me say right up front that while much conceptual art is clearly no more then seriously overrated wanking, I think that some of it really rocks.
So, it is: Art where the material mani
          • i have to throw in my art definition: art is anyting that makes you think, everything else is design. furthermore, art is subjective. what makes me think may be obvious to you and you would not consider it art. yes, it's simplistic but it works.
          • On my main file system (currently ~400 gigs of somewhat assorted crap) there is one single entry under the category "Art" and that's Lauf der Dinge (The way things go [frif.com]).

Name of the Day: FirebirDB, just to annoy those FirebirdSQL twits.

            • Name of the Day: FirebirDB, just to annoy those FirebirdSQL twits.
I was just thinking the same thing.

I dunno. Maybe it comes from being of the age group to have been just old enough to be aware of the Esso->Exxon period of the first corporate name changes to "synthetics" and then just old enough to use such consistently misdescribed companies as PeoplExpress (almost always called "People's Express) and then involved in the whole Lower East Side arts scene where people took pride in never using the na
              • does anybody have any objections to focusing on MySQL as the destination platform?

MySQL has my vote for several reasons, the main one being that it's the one I run on my own servers.

However (you knew one was coming, right?), we shouldn't lock ourselves in too hard to a specific implementation of SQL - meaning that we simply don't use that many fancy MySQL features that will be a PITA to port to other SQL servers or other systems in the future (including, but not limited to, the lawnmover man's brain, H

                • Yes, from my earlier comments I guess that it would be pretty obvious that I would agree with you on this. Personally, I'm really rooting for postgreSQL. From my outsider perspective (but also *way* too much reading) I have consistantly gotten the impression that the MySQL crowd generally goes for features while PostgreSQL has focused on more what I would consider, well, professionalism.

...but I still felt the need to mention it to seem a bit more forward-thinking and alert. Did it work?
                  LOL. Oh, yes, I
                  • I have consistantly gotten the impression that the MySQL crowd generally goes for features while PostgreSQL has focused on more what I would consider, well, professionalism.

I've always thought MySQL was lacking features compared to Postgres, but having a slight edge, performance-wise. Since I don't need those features, I've gone with MySQL for my own use. And, while I haven't actually tried Postgres, MySQL is so easy to setup it's almost embarassing.

Btw, I didn't recognize the subject.

    • You are very welcome. Nice to know, my occasional attempts at humor live and breathe when I'm not there.

Anyway, bed and the cat call, see ya'll later.
  • I would appreciate your votes for ten cats to remove on grounds of redundancy.

    Sure. Why?

The way I see it, this thing needs more cats, not fewer. As we pour data in, we'll see which cats are not being used - those are the redundant ones. If someone thought it was a good idea to create the cat at the time he or she added an entry, I say leave it for now. I just don't see pruning the tree as any more important than the naming issue right now...
