I live in Delaware where there is no sales tax, thanks to the state's friendly laws to corporations. More corporations incorporate in Delaware than most other states because of these laws so we benefit by having no sales tax. Of course, that means the rest of the country gets screwed because these corporations are subject to Delaware laws which are business friendly and only the First State's citizens get the benefit. I don't know why Amazon didn't incorporate here but Jeff Bezos seems to have found other ways around sales tax laws. Every business person looks for advantages and edges. What can you expect when a lot of $$$$ are involved? I'm actually surprised that Google is pulling out of the Chinese market since they are so large and will let you in if you play by their rules. Microsoft disgusts me by continuing to stay in such a repressive market. As long as companies are willing to kowtow to a government that treats it's people not much better than cattle, there will not be any change in the supression of free speech in China. The internet is supposed to be a place where ideas can be exchanged without government control and censorship. The Chinese government makes a mockery of this ideal and makes us all a little less free. If large corporations like Microsoft followed Google's lead by refusing to do business with a totalitarian state, the state will be forced to change and let it's people be freer to express whatever they want. If, however, these companies, especially companies that make products that can be used for the internet, follow Google's lead and say,"we will not deal with a country that supresses free speech and censors speech and where a citizen can go on the net", we can start changing the way the Chinese government treats it's people and it could lead to free exchange of ideas in China, not just what the government allows. Microsoft,by putting profits over ideals, is putting us one step closer to Orwell's society described in the book 1984. If you haven't read the book, make it your number one priority on your books to read list. The people who worked for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney had to have studied 1984 because of the principles they used running the United States government. Thankfully, the current administration is not following these political ideas, or, at least they aren't being so obvious about it. Repression is repression and needs to be stopped because if not, it will spread like a cancer. Using repression to stop aggression/repression usually ends up with more repression as in the Patriot Act who's name would be hilarious if not for the freedoms we have lost through it. The Iranian people are decent people but they have no say about their leaders and end up in jail or dead if they disagree publicly. Since we don't seem to be able to do much with the two wars we are already involved with, it is probably going to be up to Israel to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. If they don't, they can expect to be attacked with nuclear weapons as soon as Iran can make them and has enough to get the job of destroying Israel done. There are no maybes about this. Since China seems unwilling to go along with sanctions, which usually only hurt the populace, we don't have many options. I know the US government would never do it but a few well placed small nuclear devices could put a halt to Iran's nuclear program and also their missile development. If we don't do something, we will have a major crisis in a few years which will involve the death of millions of people. The music industry has two problems of their own making. The first is the overpricing of music, even while they rip off the artists who create their product. The second is most music of today sucks. Back before music/record companies began to be run by MBA's and accountants, the people who ran them cared about music. They would take time to develop an artist. Even releasing several albums that didn't sell well and keeping the artist because they believed in them and thought the public would eventually catch on. A lot of good music in the sixties and seventies happened like this. Would Frank Zappa ever get signed today? Of course not, so we're left with companies that want blockbuster hits right away which means thee is no time for artists to develop. Also, different branches of the same company don't put in the same amounts of time and money to promote artists. I have a friend who was in a band from New York who were signed in the 90's by Warner Brothers. Unfortunately, it was Warner Brothers New York who didn't really put much into promoting artists. He found out that if the had been signed by Warner Brothers L.A., they would probably have put a lot of time and $$ into promoting his groups' album. They got their advance, recorded the album, found out what was really happening from other groups on the label, and used the remainder of their advance to go to L.A. and play clubs, hoping someone would help them, and broke up when the money ran out. The music industry is changing and the dinosaurs who run it can't see what's going on so they blame it on downloading and free streaming. If they would put out better product, maybe more people would pay for it. Who wants to spend $18 on a CD which has only one or two songs worth listening to. Change is coming.
