They were using NMR to implement qubits, which is not currently scalable. The signals from the system decay rapidly as you add more and more qubits. I wouldn't be expecting any more results soon.
It appears that PL/I (and its dialects) is, or will be, the most widely used higher level language for systems programming. -- J. Sammet
