College To Save Money By Switching Email Font 306

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has come up with an unusual way of saving money: changing their email font. The school expects to use 30% less ink by switching from Arial to Century Gothic. From the article: "Diane Blohowiak is the school's director of computing. She says the new font uses about 30 percent less ink than the previous one. That could add up to real savings, since the cost of printer ink works out to about $10,000 per gallon. Blohowiak says the decision is part of the school's five-year plan to go green. She tells Wisconsin Public Radio it's great that a change that's eco-friendly also saves money."

Doom-Like Video Surveillance For Ports In Development 56

oranghutan writes "A research and development group down under is working to develop an advanced video surveillance system for ports around the world that uses video superimposed onto a 3D map. With 16-megapixel high-definition cameras on a distributed (cabled) network and a proprietary system written in a variety of languages (C++, Python, SQL, etc.), the group from NICTA is aiming to allow security teams at the Port of Brisbane — which is 110km long — to monitor shipping movements, cargo and people. By scrolling along a 3D map, the security teams can click on a location and then get a real-time video feed superimposed onto the map. Authorities from around the world with the right permissions can then access the same system. The main difference from regular surveillance systems is the ability to switch views without having to know camera numbers/locations and the one screen view."

Lack of Manpower May Kill VLC For Mac 398

plasmacutter writes "The Video Lan dev team has recently come forward with a notice that the number of active developers for the project's MacOS X releases has dropped to zero, prompting a halt in the release schedule. There is now a disturbing possibility that support for Mac will be dropped as of 1.1.0. As the most versatile and user-friendly solution for bridging the video compatibility gap between OS X and windows, this will be a terrible loss for the Mac community. There is still hope, however, if the right volunteers come forward."

Comment Just Plain Stupid (Score 2, Insightful) 302

IMHO, writing software, in Java or any language, is a creative effort. There are many fields of creative endeavor - artists, musicians, developers, etc. Pair programming is just plain stupid and nuts IMO. Do you ever hear of pair painting (canvas not houses), pair sculpture, pair composing, pair solo singing - no you don't. I had hoped this pair programming nonsense had faded into oblivion - I guess not, but let's try to push it over the cliff and into the abyss of poor ideas.

Comment Glad for Oregon's stance (Score 0) 241

As a former Oregonian (couldn't stand the rain!), I'm glad to see the University taking this stance. Oregon may have issues, but their universities generally have their heads screwed on straight.

Cheers for the Fighting Ducks - Go Ducks!
