Comment Operation: Impersonation (Score 2) 162

Maybe bespoke browsers should impersonate other "acceptable" browsers, through `User-Agent` and possibly other fingerprinting measures, so that they pass such checks. It inevitably becomes an arms race, which no one should really want, but I prefer that over the browser landscape becoming a monoculture. Perhaps while we're at it, this can also be used to thwart fingerprinting technology being used to track our browsing habits without cookies.

Comment Remember Dual_EC_DRBG? (Score 3, Insightful) 23

In 2006, NIST published a standard for random number generation, which included the Dual_EC_DRBG algorithm. In 2013, it was revealed that the NSA had inserted a backdoor into the Dual_EC_DRBG algorithm, which would allow them to predict the output of the random number generator. Perhaps we should remember that when evaluating any other NIST security recommendations.

I keep hoping for hydrogen to get a foothold, because I don't see battery EVs working for trucking, rail or recreation vehicles. I'm dubious cartridges will address these markets. And, as noted, hydrogen isn't green... yet. (In many markets, electricity isn't either.) Does anyone see hydrogen getting serious attention as an alternative?

Submission + - Kaspersky raises alarm - Fake Windows 11 installers are spreading malware (kaspersky.com)

Ammalgam writes: If you’re planning to install Windows 11, you should make sure you download it from official sources.

This is because, people who are using pirated or fake methods to get Windows 11 are also downloading malware along with it, according to Kaspersky.

The particular file referenced is called 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe.

While it sounds like it includes Windows 11 build 21996.1, and an installer that will automatically activate Windows for you there are some red flags.

First, it’s only 1.75GB, so while people who want to install Windows 11 might think that’s a large file that could be Windows, a real Windows 11 ISO is about 4.87GB.
