Wire (Score 1)

I remember my grandmother had a spool of (magnetic?) wire that she had used in some machine to record and play back sound. It definitely was not tape. Does anyone know what kind of machine that was, and how to go about getting one?

We have no idea what's on them. For all we know, long-dead relatives could give us glimpses into our family tree.
