I definitely agree. An iPhone becomes infinitely more useful after you jailbreak it. I use mine for tethering to my laptop pretty often, amongst other things. And I think the iPad has even more potential than the iPhone does. Imagine this thing mounted in your car as a media player/navigation device. This will easily become my go-to device for basic web browsing and media playback... Just gonna wait till it's jailbroken.

That's assuming the tablet Apple releases will be a touchscreen Macbook. The device they're probably going to unveil is, according to rumors, a large iPhone/iPod Touch running some variant of the same operating system. They're saying it's basically a large mobile device optimized for ebook reading and other media. A Modbook would be a different class of device.

I totally agree. When the 3.0 firmware came out, it was the first time I considered leaving my iphone in its natural state because of all the things they finally decided to include. But not being able to change SMS ringtones is ridiculous. Seeing someone who owns an unjailbroken iphone react to hearing a custom SMS ringtone (mine is the 1-up sound from Super Mario Brothers) is fairly priceless.

Though I do find it interesting that by simplifying things to make it easier on the average user (such as which type of filesystem to use) and subsequently gaining popularity, it has made itself a larger payoff for viruses. Just like the infected copies of Photoshop CS4 and iWork on torrent sites that are only really cropping up now that Apple is gaining serious popularity. Though it's less likely to get a virus from a trusted software repository, wild viruses could eventually happen to Linux too.

While you're right about moving phones between carriers, it doesn't seem to matter in this case.

IMAP and POP aren't options for some people who use Exchange. My company has IMAP and POP access disabled. If my phone didn't have a proper Exchange client, I wouldn't be able to check work email on the road.

Sounds like you picked the wrong job in the Navy. I spent over six years doing satellite communications in the Army, and got a job immediately upon getting out without even submitting a single application or resume. They hired me based solely on word of mouth.

While it's true that most military training is only on antiquated military equipment, the communications field has been moving along so quickly over the past few years that we used 100% commercial equipment. My unit was paying for people to get all types of certifications, such as MCSE and CCNA/CCNP. I have a couple friends who are still enlisted, and they're completing a RedHat Linux certification school right now. I spent a fair amount of time working with Air Force and Navy, and can tell you that we all used pretty much the same equipment too.

I agree that the military isn't for everyone, which is why I got out... But it was easily the best thing I did for my career.

That's interesting. I had a $15/month MediaNet unlimited data plan, but when I bought an iPhone 3G, they forced me to upgrade to the newer $30/month data plan. They wouldn't have sold me the phone otherwise. But then, I never get calls about using too much data, even when tethering on the road.

Try Process Explorer from Sysinternals. It actually shows a process hierarchy when one process launches another.

But I believe the hierarchy still exists in the standard Windows Task manager. Otherwise, why would "End Process Tree" be in the process context menu?

I used to run anywhere from 4-8 miles a day, 5 days a week in the Army. I definitely agree that Mizunos are great running shoes. My ankles and knees feel better wearing them than any other brand I've tried... And I've been through quite a few pairs of shoes during my military career.

It's a shame that this is one story that should've been an April Fool's Day joke.
