Contrary to most people, i started on slackware3.5,and moved onwards. Ive tried every distro, from RH 5.1(.2,& 6.0) to Deb,even Stampede, with the exception of Caldera(no install instructions could be found). In the end, ive stuck with slack for the simple fact that it is SIMPLE. Setup, config, and usage: all simple.
I hated RH most because i didnt want to use linuxconf to do little configurations, and the /etc dir on a RH system is chaotic, to say the least. When i first used Redhat, i had a s3 video card, and the installer fucked up my X configuration, so i had to do it manually.
To put it simply, its just a matter of what your used to, what you like, and what you want to do. Ive taken some heat for my loyalty, but i wont appologize. Id rather have a rock solid distro, thats a little behind, then one "on the bleeding edge" and glichy. But i do believe in Redhats intentions, to broaden the linux userbase, and push the envelope a bit. Good on em.
that is all.
