Penny Arcade On NPR 128

This morning on the NPR shuffle podcast, they included a segment about Penny Arcade. Seems only fair since NPR did Achewood a few months ago. If they just get XKCD on there, then the universe can rest.

Feed Techdirt: Cursed By Its Name: Office For Mac 2008 To Be Released In 2008 (techdirt.com)

Microsoft has recently said that it has no plans to discontinue its tradition of large-scale, heavyweight software offerings, like Office and Windows. Seeing as these two franchises continue to be huge money makers for the company, its stance is understandable. But if it has no plans to change its business model, then it needs to fix the problems associated with its current one, such as long development times and quality control. So far, anyway, these problems don't seem to be going away. The company has announced that its forthcoming Office for Mac 2008 will be released late. The company had hoped to have it ready by the coming Christmas season, but it will now be released in 2008, which is appropriate, given the name. Despite their high profile, Macs still make up a small share of the overall computer market, so it's likely that Microsoft isn't devoting a tremendous amount of resources to this area. Still, the delay is indicative of the ongoing problems facing the company.

Submission + - Forensics Expert says Al-Qaeda Images Altered

WerewolfOfVulcan writes: Wired reports that researcher Neal Krawetz revealed some veeeeeery interesting things about the Al-Qaeda images that our government loves to show off.

From the article: "Krawetz was also able to determine that the writing on the banner behind al-Zawahiri's head was added to the image afterward. In the second picture above showing the results of the error level analysis, the light clusters on the image indicate areas of the image that were added or changed. The subtitles and logos in the upper right and lower left corners (IntelCenter is an organization that monitors terrorist activity and As-Sahab is the video production branch of al Qaeda) were all added at the same time, while the banner writing was added at a different time, likely around the same time that al-Zawahiri was added, Krawetz says." Why would Al-Qaeda add an IntelCenter logo to their video? Why would IntelCenter add an Al-Qaeda logo? Methinks we have bigger fish to fry than Gonzo and his fired attorneys... }:-) The article contains links to Krawetz's presentation and the source code he used to analyze the photos.

Feed Science Daily: Mystery Of Mammalian Ears Solved (sciencedaily.com)

A 30-year scientific debate over how specialized cells in the inner ear amplify sound in mammals appears to have been settled more in favor of bouncing cell bodies rather than vibrating, hair-like cilia, according to the latest research. The finding could explain why dogs, cats, humans and other mammals have such sensitive hearing and the ability to discriminate among frequencies.
