Definition from TFA: For any two sequences x, y, EDIT(x, y) is equal to the minimum, over all sequences z, of the number of deletions and substitutions needed to transform x into z and y into z. This is equivalent to the one you cited: insertion into x is the same thing as deletion from y.
Well, here in Moscow area they tell that speeding cameras (the actual boxes on the streets, not the desktop in the police department) run Windows XP. Presumably unpatched, because OS updates must be "certified" by the Russian NSA, and the agency just doesn't think "up-to-date" is a word. The media reported these computers were hacked in February 2013. And then they reported that in January 2014 the second time. Haven't received a single speeding ticket since the second news.
And, well, what's with the data? The media didn't even think about that. I even skimmed the comments (in Russian; Google translate is really bad at informal language) on the most popular "news for Russian-speaking nerds" site: a small thread on possible tampering and validity of tickets (well, no one thinks the court is likely to take this seriously, end of thread), but nobody seems to give a fuck about possible data leak.
AFAIK, the discussion itself is legal in Russia. But Roskomnadzor maintains a list of websites publicly displaying (in the most strict sense: I haven't heard of their attention to pages which require any kind of registration to read) "information harmful to children" and ISPs are required by law to "protect children" from viewing the sites in that list.
And I heard of Readable Lisp for those of us who don't like so much parens. Sure, still need some inside lines, but why would you want a language that seems to parse "200 * sin time" and "rotate_y 20 * time" at the same time?
And of the things I have played with recently, the example looks just like layout definition in Scaloid.
6. Allow the UI scaling to go BELOW 100%. Who was the idiot that decided the UI text scaling choices should only be 100%, 125%, and 150% ??
Maybe you missed that "Set custom text size (DPI)" on the left of this screen. I know it's some decently obfuscated UI design, I spent several minutes to find it the last time I used a Windows 7 box, but it is there.
Or more specifically, most people don't want to deal with the extra step.
Why make the step extra? Opening the cover should just launch some app by default. A launcher can even have some image recognition capability to decide if the user's more likely to tweet a picture of his cat or enter some corporate videoconference.
An engineer is someone who does list processing in FORTRAN.
