Submission + - Has the Decades-Old Floating Point Error Problem been Solved? (insidehpc.com) 1

overheardinpdx writes: Has the Decades-Old Floating Point Error Problem been Solved? Today a company called Bounded Floating Point announced a "breakthrough patent in processor design, which allows representation of real numbers accurate to the last digit for the first time in computer history."

"This bounded floating point system is a game changer for the computing industry, particularly for computationally intensive functions such as weather prediction, GPS, and autonomous vehicles," said the inventor, Alan Jorgensen, PhD. “By using this system, it is possible to guarantee that the display of floating point values is accurate to plus or minus one in the last digit.”

I suppose you guys will shred me for this, but I took on this topic in my SCI-FI story, "The Observer Effect" where a scientist attempts to prove the existence of god through a kind of "cat in the box" experiment using a large cluster spun up on AWS. You can imagine that it doesn't end well. http://insidehpc.com/2013/11/o... For my day job, I write tech news at insideHPC. Forgive me for sharing my hobby here, but I think it has something to say about this topic. -Rich

Submission + - Roland Piquepaille Dies (blogspot.com)

overheardinpdx writes: I'm sad to report that longtime HPC technology pundit Roland Piquepaille died this past Tuesday. Many of you may know of him through his blog, his writings at ZDNet and Slashdot, and his many years of software visualization work at SGI and Cray Research.

I worked with Roland 20 years ago at Cray, where we both wrote tech stories for the company newsletter. With his focus on how new technologies modify our way of life, Roland was really doing Slashdot-type reporting before there was even a world wide web. You can read his brief ZDNet bio here.

Rest in peace, Roland. You will be missed.
