Management decided that copying client backup data to spinning disks was expensive so they just piled the disks in to a storage facility. They also decided that a proper disk tracking system was an unnecessary expense when there were so many cardboard boxes just laying around unused. After all who ever needs a files from a backup from last year?
They also neglected to write sunset clauses in to the backup contracts so they get to keep all those degrading disks in storage for ever.
