Comment High End Audio is not dead, it is evolving (Score 1) 68

For anyone who thinks high end audio is dead or dying, please visit the AXPONA show in Chicago. It is huge, and likely full of names you have never heard of. Sure, some brand names you can trace back 50+ years may have sold out or gone defunct, but for every "old name" HiFi brand that is no longer I can show a new one making top spec gear.

Comment I owned a DNS-321 and it worked great for 10 years (Score 1) 87

Then one fine day in 2020 data started going missing on both RAID 1 drives. I was able to retrieve about 80% of the data with recovery software. Before dumping the old NAS I considered custom firmware. There is an alternative: Alt-F is a free and open source firmware for the DLINK DNS-320/320L/321/323/325/327L and DNR-322L. Anyone here tried it?

Comment Nothing new here, 2001 all over again. (Score 1) 169

I remember this happening at a company I worked for in 2001. Company laid off 10% of Engineering staff, found themselves with too much work, asked HR to rehire some people back as contract employees. I knew the head of HR well and she was not happy with this directive. She wound up quitting a few weeks later. One of the laid off engineers with significant knowledge of certain projects formed a consulting company and hired himself out to the company. I think he had the upper hand and wound up doing well under the circumstances.

I really miss his style of delivering a narrative. He was a very convincing person, whether he was talking about the phone you should own, or the way public schools should be funded. It wasn't so much whether I agreed with him, it was that he came to the conversation well educated about the underlying issues. He made you think about why he came to his conclusion about something, then think more about your own conclusions. There are not a lot of leaders around that can do that.

Comment UX/UI Design (Score 2) 142

Guarantee all car companies have a dedicated UX/UI design department. These people should have equal knowledge in both dedicated hardware and software controlled user interaction. A good UX/UI department would conduct user group studies to narrow down to the most effective, fast responding driver control experience.

Comment What's All This Dead Analog Guys Stuff, Anyhow? (Score 1) 187

Very, very sad news. I have been to a few of his lectures and can say that this man was an original. He presented with an overhead projector (the analog presentation method). I don't know what it is about the analog gurus, they seem to live a mildly tortured life. Bob Pease is my favorite, second only to Bob Widlar. That guys stories are so far out there. Pease did a writeup of some of his most memorable stuff... makes me wish I were there when it happened. I can only say that I am glad I met Pease in his time here on Earth... RIP my friend. http://www.national.com/rap/Story/widlar.html

Comment Used Digital Tektronix Scope (Score 1) 337

I would recommend a used Tektronix digital scope. For simple needs up to 100MHz even at 4 channels you can find one for under $1k. If you want to go real cheap grab a TDS210. I think that was the first of the small portable digital scopes they made and without probes they can be had for $300. For a 4ch 100MHz color scope look for a TDS2014, that is what I use every day and it suits me fine for low speed designs.
