  • Perhaps the greatest benefit to more widespread teaching wouldn't necessarily come directly from the teaching. Rather, it would help most by removing the mystique of the classroom.

    Most people who go through the public school grill seem to come out thinking that teaching (and learning) are things that are only done within a particular context (lecture with chalkboard).   • Actually, on a related note, a while ago I had kind of a nifty (if perhaps not original) idea for textbooks that might be appropriate in the context of a 'Slashdot Tells' type of section.

    The idea came from the year or so that I spent tutoring other people in the nuances of C++. I noticed that in order to teach well, I had to develop a repertoire of little explanations for each concept. And different explanations would make sense to different people.
