As suggested in the link, I'd "avoid them entirely," although easier said then done. If they ask about your work, change the subject (it's a trap). Don't ask them about their work.
If they're your mentor, seek out developing relations with other colleagues. That way if things get rough, you may have an opportunity to sneak out into your colleagues dept.
I find detecting these people is the hard part. My red flag is when they're constantly curious about your work, and not contributing anything about theirs.
In my opinion, the more aggressive route usually doesn't work, and leads to wasting time. Just beat your own drum, and get your results in. Your hard work, and relations with other colleagues will carry more weight than their delusions.
