That was a developer position and yes I consider *that* to be normal.

It may be normal for Germany, but it's not at all normal in the U.S. Especially that "commission for >40 hours" part.

You don't say what city your parents lived near, but if it was Boston that must have been purchased quite some time ago. Nowadays that would easily be a $1M house.
