Comment Centralia, Pennsylvania anyone? (Score 2) 170
I couldn't help but be reminded of this city in reading this. I know they are not necessarily the same, but the fires there were reported to be started in, you guessed it, a landfill. Those fires started in 1962 and are expected to last another century. Granted, that fire hit an exposed coal vein, which set off a chain of events, so let's just hope there are no combustible materials near these and that they do, in fact, burn out in a couple of years.
