I did the Gentoo thing for a few years until I got sick of being abused on the forums and chat rooms. The reality is that open source is a social endeavor. For some it's about showing everyone else how smart you are, but for the rest of us it's about working together with people who are intelligent, friendly, and fun to be with. If you are at a party and you come across a rude and offensive person, you turn away and find another group to chat with.
