Some years ago I looked into this from the perspective of human ancestry. Apparently, apes living in the rain forest can have as much as 50% of their food coming from figs.

Now, modern fruit cultivars probably have more acid and sugar than rain forest products, but still I don't think it's likely that fresh fruit consumption is a real problem in modern diets.

I don't like being sick and don't like having sick, grumpy children. *cough* *cough* *cough* These viruses are a side-effect of a big population, cramped living quarters and people constantly travelling.

If they manage to engineer relatively long lasting vaccines against a whole bunch of viruses, I'm happy. The HPV vaccines are a big success, so throw in one for foot warts, too. Some won't take the vaccine. Not my problem, as long as I can vaccinate my household, I'm good.

We're rich enough to do this, and having a top modern vaccine production facility (clearly needed to solve this) can only help when the next zoonotic pandemic starts spreading.

Now, that may be hype, but Musk has been pivoting the company to robotaxis, and to really unlock a big robotaxi market, they need to keep (amortized) hardware costs down, and one of the ways of doing that is through longevity.

In fact, I'd go so far to say that the real reason for the decision to be revisited probably doesn't actually have anything to do with building nuclear, but simply that the juicy EU subsidies for research and development of new energy tech is affected by this decision. And it so happens to be that Denmark has two nuclear SMR startups that would really love to get their hands on some of that money. They've been lobbying for years.

I recently bought a second-hand Microsoft Surface Go tablet and installed Debian on it, and lo and behold, GNOME actually works decently on it. Not quite as polished as Android or iOS in some places, in others it actually works better, but the fact that it's all well-known standard Linux stuff is just incredible. I was wondering how to sync books from my OpenWRT router. Well, I could install some kind of dinghy - or I could just write a one-line script calling rsync over ssh. Job done.

I don't have the weird Surface keyboard attachment, but you can simply plug in a USB hub with mouse and keyboard, and it's a computer with a small screen.

One of the best things about it is that I won't have to worry about vendor updates.

There are extensions for the complexity, some of which are shipped with any standard installation of GNOME. Workspaces are built in. Instant keyboard search and execute is built in.

A year or two ago I was trying to buy a localized ad on Google for a local institution. We're talking about something where, if you were within 15 minutes of the institution, you'd get an ad if you searched for "[instutitions] near [place]". No ads were showing for this case at all. From my limited experience 10-15 years ago, an ad like this in an empty space could be bought for a few cents per click. Now the price was a few dollars.

Maybe you think ads should die, etc., but the money paid to Google and Facebook are come from the consumer in the end.

I was with you when the first incidents happened, because there is indeed a propaganda war. But the summary says there has been a spike. Do you have data on this?

Yeah, one of the great things about Linux is the variety.

I don't think GNOME is very innovative, but it's a pretty clean interface, keyboard launching works well, it even has some simple window tiling behavior built in. The built-in workspaces work pretty well.

I'd say for most people coming from more rigid OSes (Windows or MacOS), it's a nice upgrade and easy to get started with.

If you love one of the previous paradigms, obviously you're not going to be satisfied, but that's the great thing about Linux, there's something for you too.

Well, then there are good news for you - try a recent GNOME - there's no "Activities" label in sight at all!

PS: What really works well with GNOME shell is a keyboard. You hit the Windows key, then type term + RET and get a terminal. Or fire + RET and get Firefox. There's visual feedback so you can see what's going to be launched.
