Interestingly, more than a few sorts of bacteria do just fine in urine; urinary tract/sexually transmitted infections can be cultured (grown) from urine and identified to help choose the right antibiotic/treatment strategy. It's sterile because a healthy urinary tract is nearly free of bacteria to start with and the kidneys don't allow anything *near* the size of a bacterium to be filtered into the urine from the bloodstream (they're very fine strainers)
