Cobol managed HUGE Databases 20 years before SQL and relational DBs even existed. You had to keep each table in a different file and program all "queries" step by step (look for invoice# in the invoices file, go to the items file o get the item# or go to the customer file to find the customer # and details). No built in relations nor consistency checks. Not to mention printing a report. Had to move the printer head to the end of the line, advance one line, skip X positions, print, advance another line, advance a page, etc. It could take a couple of days to make a simple printing. If you never programmed Cobol, good luck with it's old fashioned logic.

Unix has a very different way of handling executable files than Windows. In Windows, the extension is what makes a file executable. In Unix the x permission makes an executable. Since files are created without x permission by default, the user has to explicitly give this permission in order to execute the file. In Windows, execution is automatic.
