They do hire people like that. They're called "system operators". I should know; I have been hired as one. Of course, operators do much more on a shift than just monitor the screens every ten minutes (yes, we have to check every ten minutes--even during lunch). We also perform system backups, make sure the temperature in the data center stays a balmy 68 degrees, maximum, run reports for users who can't find their "any key" and "other duties as assigned"--if you've got a boss like mine, that means half your day is "other duties", like "run dishwasher at 10pm" and "file my reports for me".
