There is a very strong free wireless network in NYC. Currently there are approximately 30 working nodes, including Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. All nodes are maintained by volunteers and there is no charge to use the service. Many more nodes are going up within the next few weeks, and some members are working hard on trying to get more public spaces "heated up" with free Internet Access via WiFi.
Some of the NYCWireless nodes are in Brooklyn, a few are in Queens, and some are in New Jersey - 10 minutes from Midtown Manhattan.
