Robotic Mold 118

Canis Lupus writes to mention that researchers from the University of West England are designing the world's first biological robot, constructed from mold. The robot, "Plasmobot," will be created using vegetative slime mold called plasmodium (Physarum polycephalum) that is commonly found in forests, gardens, and most damp places in the UK. "This new plasmodium robot, called plasmobot, will sense objects, span them in the shortest and best way possible, and transport tiny objects along pre-programmed directions. The robots will have parallel inputs and outputs, a network of sensors and the number crunching power of super computers. The plasmobot will be controlled by spatial gradients of light, electro-magnetic fields and the characteristics of the substrate on which it is placed. It will be a fully controllable and programmable amorphous intelligent robot with an embedded massively parallel computer."

OpenSUSE Beta Can Brick Intel e1000e Network Cards 129

An anonymous reader writes "Some Intel cards don't just not work with the new OpenSUSE beta, they can get bricked as well. Check your hardware before you install!" The only card mentioned as affected is the Intel e1000e, and it's not just OpenSUSE for which this card is a problem, according to this short article: "Bug reports for Fedora 9 and 10 and Linux Kernel 2.6.27rc1 match the symptoms reported by SUSE users."

I built mine last summer using an old 27" TV I had sitting around, an old 15" SVGA monitor I had sitting around, an old 1.1 GHz PC with an old Radeon 7500 (yup, all sitting around), and some 300 watt speakers that were (yes, you guessed it) sitting around.

I had to go buy $35 in lumber (plus $5 in wood screws) for this beaut, but the real expenditure was on the wonderful controller I got from http://treyonics.com/. These guys are great! Forget about that cheesmo X-Arcade controller; take a look at what Treyonics' Devastator II offers on their website...you NEED 2 joysticks, a trackball, a spinner, 6 buttons for each joystick (in-joystick button optional), plus buttons on the side for pinball games.

Here are pictures of my "finished product"...it ain't pretty, but it's pretty fun: http://devlinks.net/gallery/MAME_cabinet

Total build time: 3 days.

Total cost (assuming no cost for crap that was sitting around): $490
