Journal Journal: Could a Computer Virus Determine the Outcome of an Election?

The team from Princeton University responsible for a paper detailing serious security vulnerabilities in the Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine, have also released a video demonstrating just what it would take to rig an election. They go on to theorize how a virus installed on one machine could spread to others. I don't think that I've ever seen a better argument for open source software.

Journal Journal: Why All The Hype About 0day? 85

Michael Sutton has an interesting opinion on the security vulnerabilities that we need to be concerned about. According to Sutton, it's not the new ones that are scary, it's the old ones that have long since been forgotten.

He illustrates his point by walking through an example where he uses Google and Yahoo! to identify 50 web servers that are wide open to attack. The list includes an ivy league school, various colleges and a company traded on the NYSE.

Scary stuff.
