The latest lame alpha is up to 3.90 now, and has been tweaked even more for the best possible results using --r3mix. http://www.hot.ee/smpman/mp3/alpha.html
Personally, I use -r3mix -b128 as my command line vbr variable, and I can hardly tell the differece between cd and mp3.
