nspher's Journal: this is what we go through...

today i went to lunch with four of my male colleagues. the conversation started innocently enough...

j: only girls like U2.
me: i don't like U2. you're being pretty general.
j: every girl i know likes U2.
me: !!

the conversation degenerated (i say degenerated b/c talking about harvard with non-harvard people = not fun) into a discussion of women in science. ugggh. i felt pretty belligerent towards the whole lot of 'em. lunch sucked.

on the walk back, in lieu of verbalizing their sentiments, the four males decided to instead toss around a tennis ball. pass ball to other male, throw ball at my butt. pass ball to other male, throw ball at my butt. everything ended with empty threats to ruin their lives if the ball touched me again.

i ask you, is this a nurturing environment for women in science?
