Yep, same here in Portugal. As always, USA people believe their country represents the whole world. A brief Wikipedia search shows that the only countries that DON'T have an identity system implemented are Australia, UK and USA (Bangladesh, China and India are implementing theirs).
I have an ID since I'm 10 years old, and I did never feel I had Big Brother watching over my shoulder or my liberties as a citizen in risk. Much the opposite: it is very reassuring to be able to prove that I am who I am in a very quick way, so that my rights as a european citizen are respected.
This is a false issue, it works fairly well all over the world, and I believe the /. crowd shouldn't be wasting their time over some laughable conspiracy theory...
