Siemens Fixes SCADA Flaws 36

itwbennett writes "Siemens has fixed a pair of bugs in its S7-1200 controller, which is used to control machines on factory floors, power stations and chemical plants. The bugs were discovered earlier this year by NSS researcher Dillon Beresford, who planned to disclose the bugs at Black Hat in August. The US Department of Homeland Security said that Siemens' patches fix 'a portion' of the problems Beresford has discovered and that it 'continues to work with Siemens and Mr. Beresford on the other reported problems.'"

Endeavour Launch Now Slated For Monday 55

For anyone camping in Florida through the series of delays in the shuttle Endeavour's launch, it may be nearly time to get out the earplugs and champagne: though there's a fair chance of yet another weather delay, for now the shuttle's final launch is slated for tomorrow. If you're thinking of driving in to catch a glimpse, good news — a Monday launch may mean a smaller crowd.

NEC is rolling out a new home server / client solution for persons of the active "digital lifestyle." Dubbed "Lui," we're talking platform, not device, though the family kicks off with a trio of new devices for iEXPO in Japan. The idea here is simple enough (and certainly not new): a central home server manages your video, music and photos which can then be streamed out to a handheld "PC Remoter Pocket" and/or laptop "PC Remoter Notebook." The server features a pair of terrestrial digital high-def tuners with a DVR functionality operating independently of the PC. The PC Remoter Notebook brings a 10.6-inch WXGA LCD, measures 257 x 182-mm, and weights just 650-grams (1.4-pounds). The handheld MID device packs a 4.1-inch touchscreen and weighs just 250-grams (about 0.55-pounds). All should hit Japan en masse sometime before mid-2008. It's just a shame that the name sounds like a french toilet.

SoyChemist writes: "When she started her job as a new professor at UC Merced, Michelle Khine was stuck without a clean room or semiconductor fabrication equipment, so she went MacGyver and started making Lab-on-a-Chip devices in her kitchen with Shrinky Dinks, a laser printer, and a toaster oven. She would print a negative image of the channels onto the polystyrene sheets and then make them smaller with heat. The miniaturized pattern served as a perfect mould for forming rounded, narrow channels in PDMS — a clear, synthetic rubber."
