Just spitballing here, but the encoding/decoding is probably needed so the image being sent can be shaped properly first. I've had a look into a few VR headsets and the optics can get pretty wild in those.The image going into them is a fish-eyed mess but the optics displays it properly. Just a hunch on my part though.

I'm glad they are having fun with it. The episode with the Klingons singing still cracks me up. The latest one as a "soap opera" was a miss in my opinion though. I hope they are not trying to create some sort of reoccurring antagonizing entity like Q was in TNG. The character Q was strange but worked well in TNG. I don't think something like that would work in SNW. Q was introduced at the very beginning of TNG (Encounter at Farpoint) so you naturally expected to see him later.
