Comment This is a Racist Plan by the IRS. (Score 1) 240

Requiring ID to interact with the IRS severely limits access to tax services for disadvantaged populations. There is no proof that there is any fraud whatsoever in accessing the IRS's website or individual taxpayer accounts. There's no reason for that access to be any different than access to voter registration in states with robust voter protection. In New York, you can register to vote online with no identification and no validation of your address and receive a PIN code. You can vote online the same day using that PIN code. We know that there is no voter fraud with this system (CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Democrats in Congress tell us this constantly). If there's no voter fraud in a system that allows you to register and vote without showing any identification or your face, why would the IRSs system be any different? Or am I missing something?

Comment What judicial decisions? (Score 2) 424

Facts matter - not a single election case was heard on its merits. They were all thrown out on preliminary grounds: for lacking standing, for not having any available remedy (since the court couldn't change the election outcome), and for other reasons. A lot of impartial legal observers thought the courts threw out cases that would have been (or were heard) four years earlier. You say "the judges involved not only found no evidence of fraud", but that's not what happened. The judges found no evidence of fraud because they didn't look. Again - not a single case had evidence introduced, because not a single case was actually heard on the merits (went to trial).

Comment Lua over Forth (Score 1) 116

FreeBSD rewrote its boot loaders into Lua, because Forth isn't a widely known or used language. Forth also has an unusual execution model, preventing people from casually picking it up (like you can with Lua). It's the only non-experimental language I know of that provides true coroutines: it has two complete call stacks.

The bigger problem with Trump's travel ban was that it came from TRUMP!!! It takes a specially horrible President to force the country's chief medical officer to lie repeatedly to the public - about the need for masks, the origin of the virus, and more. It wasn't Fauci's fault he lied to the nation - it was TRUMPS!!! I think Slashdotters miss that, even in the midst of a deadly pandemic, you have to look at the bigger picture. Getting rid of Trump was more important than... well, anything else, wasn't it?

The retail jewelry store isn't lying. It's just that no one will buy diamonds regularly without complete documentation, from the original rough stone in a mine to the cut stone you want to sell, including all of the stones cut from rough - the names and addresses of each buyer/seller (and they must be reputable), the name/address of the cutter, etc. If you buy a $5 million tennis bracelet from Cartier, they will have that information on file and provide it to you on request. If it's a $5,000 stone from a mall jewelery store, they probably also have that information in their central office - but little incentive to provide it to you.

Comment Public defenders (Score 1) 195

Most public defenders very much do care about the outcome, same as any defense attorney. They just usually lack the resources private counsel has. In the context of representing you during an interrogation, why would it be any skin off their backs to give you good counsel? Do you think they're secretly agents of the state?

I have been defamed on a social platform that negatively impacted my financial interests, as I use that platform entirely for business purposes (Twitter). I reported the false and inflammatory actions using the moderation tools, and received a "We've decided to not take any action" response after a few days. If the social platform had been a conservative talk radio show or a newspaper, I could have sued. But since Twitter is completely shielded under CDA 2030 from any liability for anything they publish - even though they act as an editor and no different than any other journalism outlet - I had no recourse. That's the difference. But I'd guess you knew that.

Comment Double Masking (Score 1) 290

Dr. Fauci also said repeatedly, starting in early February, that people should wear two masks to stop the spread of COVID. The Biden administration completely ignored his recommendations, and the result is tens of thousands of needless deaths - directly due to President Biden's refusal to listen to scientific recommendations.

I think that has to happen, and sooner better than later (although I'm not worried about it, there's little chance of it *not* happening). How is it equitable that students who had their admissions requirements waived in a competitive environment are then set up for failure? It's racist, sexist, and homphobic, plain and simple. Disadvantaged students have other obligations that majority students don't - like fighting for their very lives in a world of white supremacy.
