pt is the recommended standard by the w3c.
Not only that, but it does indeed work and is totally overrideable by the users browser just as xx-small, x-small etc are, except that with pt you get more than 7 options.
Actually, no; you might be a Mozilla user, in which case, yes, pt can be scaled by changing the text size, but IE won't change text size unless you use the "size" attribute.
Just another reason to use the better browser...
