My HTC Topaz does tethering without network interaction. I enable connection sharing, plug in the USB cable, and it shows up as a USB NIC to my PC. I say my PC, as it works on Windows xp, 7, and Ubuntu 9.10 without any configuration whatsoever.

That's right (I own a topaz as well). People always complain about microsoft, but after years of using their mobile OS, I am seriously unimpressed with the iphone and android. Sure, their buttons are bigger and shinier, but Windows Mobile is years ahead in actual functionality. I'll take the freedom of installing whatever software I choose on my pocket pc over being told what I can and cannot do by apple and google any day.

Steampunk Con Mixes In More Maker Fun 50

California has once again been blessed with another steampunk convention, this time to be held in Emeryville, CA on March 12-14 as the "Nova Albion Steampunk Exhibition." This year's event promises to mix in much more of the DIY/maker flavor for a greater hands-on feel. Steampunk has been gaining much broader appeal in recent months with the continued growth of maker communities, and the many delightful varieties of music and literature. The con will feature, among other things, a 2 day track of 2-hour how-to, hands-on, and interactive workshops gear towards makers, DIY-ers, mad scientists, and evil geniuses. Of course, if you are an evil genius you probably don't need a workshop except as a gathering for potential test subjects.

Why Won't Apple Sell Your iTunes LPs? 306

jfruhlinger writes "Over the weekend there's been a bit of controversy over the fact that Apple has effectively shut indie artists out of the iTunes LP market by charging $10,000 in design fees. But the real question is why Apple is in charge of designing the new iTunes LP at all, since the format is based on open Web design technologies. There's at least one iTunes LP already available outside the iTunes store. Why won't Apple sell it?"

I do agree with some of the people here regarding the Kindle's price versus lack of features as compared to a laptop. Personaly, I quite like using my pocket pc (touch diamond 2) for reading ebooks. The screen is small but the 480x800 resolution is very nice. The only thing it lacks is a good cbr/cbz reader for reading comics, but I found that an eeepc is perfect for that task so I won't complain. Perhaps the 200 dollar tablet that was mentioned on this site some time ago would be a good alternative to the kindle: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/07/21/we-want-a-dead-simple-web-tablet-help-us-build-it/
