Submission + - Microsoft unveils IE9 beta (pcpro.co.uk)

njkobie writes: MIcrosoft has unveiled the beta for Internet Explorer 9. Aside from the expected hardware acceleration support and HTML5 tools, it also features a cleaner interface and integration with Windows 7 that lets users pin websites directly to the taskbar and even pull in notifications from sites. IE9 also keeps an eye on add-ons, letting users see if they're slowing the browser down, and introduces a new download scanning system which should be less in your face than current ones. The sites on display at the launch — including a revamped Bing — look great, but will it be enough to pull users back from Firefox and Chrome?

Submission + - Dell wows IDF with 'dual personality' laptop (pcpro.co.uk)

njkobie writes: Dell was the unlikely star of today's keynote at IDF, unveiling a convertible tablet. While that might sound a bit been there, done that, the Inspiron Duo can be used as a tablet or opened up to offer a keyboard. The screen rotates inside the frame, taking it to the netbook form factor. It runs on an Atom processor and will be available at the end of the year, Dell said.

Submission + - Intel unveils Sandy Bridge (pcpro.co.uk)

njkobie writes: Intel has officially unveiled Sandy Bridge, its latest platform architecture, at the first day of IDF in San Francisco. The platform is the successor to the Nehalem/Westmere architecture and integrates graphics directly onto the CPU die. It also upgrades the Turbo Mode already seen in Core i5 and i7 processors to achieve even greater speed improvements. Turbo Mode on Sandy Bridge processors can now draw more than the chip’s nominal TDP where the system is cool enough to do so safely, enabling even greater boosts in core speeds than those seen in Westmere. No details of specific products have been made available, but Intel has confirmed that processors built on the new architecture will be referred to as “second generation Core processors”, and are expected to go on sale in early 2011. In 2012 it is due to be shrunk to a 22nm process, under the name Ivy Bridge.
