Journal nizo's Journal: Blade Trinity(no spoilers) & dumb computers in the movies? 14

It was ok (exciting review so far eh?). Ok effects, medium plot, etc. etc. (what else would you expect?) Well the acting was terrible, but that shouldn't be a suprise either. If you liked the first one you will probably like this one (I never even saw the second one)

One thing that annoyed the hell out of me was the usual dumb computer things in the movie (won't go into details for spoiler reasons, but I am sure people here know what I mean). Why can't tv/movies make anything even semi-realistic when it comes to computers? Part of it is usually for lame drama reasons I know, but damn.

  • ...that computers should follow the model of what's in the movies and that computers are lame for not doing so. ;P But if you do that, then all you wind up with is a video game that pretends to be an app I suppose...
  • Sometimes a suspension of disbelief is required in order to enjoy a movie. Apart from literary devices employed to advance the action of a film, one often has to leave their knowledge of material subjects at the door in order to let the film do what it is supposed to do: entertain.

That said, I loved seeing NMap in the Matrix and realized right there how cool it is when you don't have to ignore obvious factual errors in film.

Definately enjoyable, unless you don't suspend disbelief.

    • There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's just plain stupid.

A good example: Digital Fortress by Dan Brown. They're worried that a "mainframe" that is designed by a top NSA scientist might "get a virus". Now, come on. Anyone with half a brain knows that mainframes aren't just huge PCs. Such utter and complete ignorance is not simply "creative license", it's so stupid as to break the fourth wall and destroy the suspended disbelief.

Exactly. Then again, if I watched a movie about brain surgery I am guessing I wouldn't notice things that are wrong but a brain surgeon watching it with me would go nuts at all the stupid stuff they did. Still bugs the crap outta me and makes it hard to watch a movie/tv with me sometimes since I bitch and moan about all the stupidity....

  • I don't want computers in movies to behave like real computers, I want real computers to behave like the ones in the movies!

I want to be able to crack an encrypted file in 4 seconds (whew, that was a super-secure code! it usually only takes 3 seconds to open an encrypted file). I want on-screen messages that are big enough to read across the room. I want the computer to announce that I've successfully accessed the email/missle command center/swiss bank account/etc. Mostly, I want voice recognition. [slashdot.org]

Ok, so I really liked that cancelled show, and all I could think when I saw that actor was how cheezy his acting was and how anytime now I was sure he'd start rattling off random facts like how many geese there are per capita in Canada or how the gross dosmestic product of third world countries would only pay for Bill Gates guest house.

Well, that and Parker Posey...I just kept remembering her when she was on Will & Grace, and wanted her to pull down her imaginary buble
