Journal nizo's Journal: Narnia and a better Dumbledore replacement found! 4

First I wanted to mention that I finally saw the Narnia movie, and all I have to say is, "Wow!" What an excellent movie. I am particularly amazed that they were able to integrate the talking animals into the movie so well. There are some scenes that might be disturbing to a few wee ones, and it was much more "serious" than I thought it would be. Though it has been quite some time since I read the book, it seemed to be reasonably faithful to the story. The background soundtrack was excellent as well.

Oh, and I thought the guy that played Father Christmas (James Cosmo) would have been an excellent replacement for the dearly departed Richard Harris in the role of Dumbledore. Oh well.

  • Too "cinematic" in places, throughout...

The wardrobe was supposed to be quite ordinary. In the film, its elaborately carved with figures that hint of its origin, and it is mysteriously 'unveiled' by Lucy. The Wolves chasing the Beavers and children was highly "pumped" as an action sequence! In the book, the good guys are gone before their arrival, and never in sight of the wolves. That whole "Peter at the river with a sword on the ice" was all over the top!

Still, they didn't rape the book - many parts w
    • Ok yeah the sword in the ice scene did bother me too. I especially liked how the ice chunk the sword was stuck in bobbed around behind the kids (and didn't just wash away) after they got to shore. But despite the little annoying bits I liked it. I thought the minotaur looking guy was done particularly well, as were many of the animals/creatures.
      • Yes.

They were able to somehow make terrifying creatures, without the effect of prurient, perverse horror. My kids were not terrified by these. I wouldn't have the five-year-old watch LoTR!
  • I think you're better off seeing a movie when it's been a while since you've read the book, otherwise you can get caught up comparing the two instead of just enjoying the film.
