Journal nizo's Journal: Quicky movie recommendation: Smoke Signals 9

I have been meaning to post a journal entry since seeing this movie again recently. The movie "Smoke Signals" is based on the book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie. This movie is both amusing and insightful, with wonderful performances by a whole bunch of excellent Native American actors (This is the first movie to be written, directed, and co-produced by a Native American by the way). The main story focuses on a young man's love/hate relationship with his father, which strikes a chord with me. Excellent view of the often bizarre life on a reservation as well. Very entertaining if you can find it at the video store.

I'll second the recommendation. This is one of the few DVDs that my wife and I own. Great movie. I really enjoy Gary Farmer's work in this (and in "Dead Man").

I haven't seen Dead Man but people have mentioned it before, I will have to add that one to my "to see" list :-)
      • "Dead Man" is one of my all-time favorites, but I'll acknowledge that one of my movie-buff friends thinks it was one of the worst things he's ever seen.

Still, I stand by my recommendation, if nothing else for the scorching Neil Young soundtrack.

  • He wrote The Toughest Indian in the World. We were un-impressed. I'll pass.
    • I am reading Reservation Blues by the same author; the movie isn't as outright bizarre as the stories in his writing. Don't skip this movie if your only reason for not seeing it is because of the author :-)
  • Well it's nice to have something to look for on Netflix, left to my own devices I end up getting progressively stranger independant films.
    • If you have Netflix there is a movie you may want to see called The Fast Runner, it is written and directed by Eskimo's and is completely spoken in the native Eskimo language.
      • I thought Whale Rider was pretty good too; an interesting Inuit movie. I will look for Fast Runner, since I have been reading several books about the inuit since I saw Whale Rider :-)

1 + 1 = 3, for large values of 1.
