What?? You don't get increased standard of living because corporations are good. If any of the large manufacturers you mentioned could get away with selling you a 1980's 8088 PC for $5,000 while paying $0.02/hr to their workforce, they would do it in a flash; otherwise they would be cheating their investors. They reasons they can't get away with it are because a) competition and b) gov. regulations. Corporations spend most of their money in trying to a) kill the competition and b) change regulations. Big corporations can kill their competition by innovating, or by changing regulations in their favor; but why innovate when you can just buy politicians that enact laws that perpetuate your business model, and kill any highly innovative competitors. Thus, corporations are evil, and non-lobbied government regulations that foster competition and innovation in the marketplace turn all that evil energy into standard of living increasing good..

Dog owners can sleep easy tonight because physicists have discovered how rapidly a wet dog should oscillate its body to dry its fur. Presumably, dogs already know. From the article: "Today we have an answer thanks to the pioneering work of Andrew Dickerson at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and a few buddies. But more than that, their work generates an interesting new conundrum about the nature of shaken fur dynamics. Dickerson and co filmed a number of dogs shaking their fur and used the images to measure the period of oscillation of the dogs' skin. For a labrador retriever, this turns out to be 4.3 Hz."

MIT Unveils First Solar Cells Printed On Paper 125
lucidkoan writes "MIT researchers recently unveiled the world's first thin-film solar cell printed on a sheet of paper. The panel was created using a process similar to that of an inkjet printer, producing semiconductor-coated paper imbued with carbon-based dyes that give the cells an efficiency of 1.5 to 2 percent. That's not incredibly efficient, but the convenience factor makes up for it. And in the future, researchers hope that the same process used in the paper solar cells could be used to print cells on metal foil or even plastic. If they're able to gear efficiencies up to scale, the development could revolutionize the production and installation of solar panels."
