Hackable Microcontroller-Powered Valentine's Card 133

compumike writes "If you have a significant other to impress this Valentine's Day, consider putting your programming skills to use. This video tutorial shows how to build an LED Heart Valentine's card, powered by a microcontroller running C code, with a neat randomized 'twinkling' effect in an interrupt handler. Think about it: how many ladies can say that their Valentine's card runs at 14 MHz?"

You really should try out gimp 2.4, it's been out since October last year and has vast improvements over 2.2 (2.4.5 is the current minor version). There both rectangular and elliptical selections can be resized (while they're "fresh", i.e. as long as no other tool is used/selection has been put on top of them which would "finalize" the selection, i.e. make a bitmap out of it).

I don't think there's a way to resize and rotate in one go, but I just did the following and it went quite well: Select what you want to resize/rotate, cut and paste it (so it becomes floating), move one corner to the desired location, select the rotate tool, move the rotation center on top of that corner, drag the second corner to its designated location (it won't resize now, but have the correct angle), use the resize tool, drag the second corner to its location. This will move the first one a bit, but you can drag it back again.

As for printing, gimp 2.4 has a much easier to use print plugin than gimp-print/gutenprint which where used with 2.2. You still can install and use the gutenprint-plugin if you need the level of configuration it offers.

Customer Loses Xbox 360 Artwork During Repair 330

An anonymous reader writes "The Consumerist is reporting that one unlucky individual had to send his Xbox 360 in for repairs. The catch is he had spent a great deal of time getting signatures and artwork on the outside of the console from notable members of the gaming industry. He specifically asked and even sent a letter along with his console requesting that the outside of the case be returned intact. When he got it back it was once again, plain white. Assuming that this is a genuine claim, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the missing/cleaned case Microsoft should at least apologize to the guy."

Stopping Cars With Microwave Radiation 522

Ponca City, We Love You writes "Researchers have created an electromagnetic system that can quickly bring a vehicle to a stop by sending out pulses of microwave radiation to disable the microprocessors that control the central engine functions in a car. A 200-pound unit attached to the roof of a police car can be used to stop fleeing and noncooperative vehicles. The average power emitted in a single shot is about 10 kilowatts at 100 hertz and since each radiated pulse lasts about 50 nanoseconds, the total energy output is 100 joules at a distance of 15 meters. One concern with the device is that it could cause an accident if a car is disabled and a driver loses steering control. The device could also disable other vehicles in the area so the most practical application may be for perimeter protection at remote areas. Criminals have a work-around too. Since electronic control modules were not built into most cars until 1972, the system will not work on automobiles made before that year."

Submission + - Software patent debate over in Europe for now?

Anonymous EPA writes: The website of the European Patent Office is running a story about a recent agreement not to revive the debate on software patents in Europe nor to promote new legislation. The article can be found at http://www.epo.org/focus/news/2007/20070706.html . To quote: "All speakers welcomed unequivocally the opportunity to discuss the issue at a high level and made clear that a new CII (computer-implemented inventions) debate followed by legal modifications was neither necessary nor desirable."

EMI — Ditching DRM is Going To Cost You 220

33rpm writes "EMI has told online music stores that selling its catalog without DRM is going to cost them a lot of money. 'EMI is the only major record label to seriously consider abandoning the disaster that is DRM, but earlier reports that focused on the company's reformist attitude apparently missed the mark: EMI is willing to lose the DRM, but they demand a considerable advance payment to make it happen. EMI has backed out of talks for now because no one will pay what they're asking.'"

DNA-rainbow, A New Vision of Human Chromosomes 161

An anonymous reader writes "Two scientists have rendered amazing pictures using datafiles from the human genome project. They assigned different colors to the DNA and rendered images showing interesting patterns and strange structures of our chromosomes. It might be a groundbreaking new idea for displaying and maybe better understanding our genes. With its fascinating pictures it is a beautiful mix of science and art."
