i think you've got it, actually. his comment does follow, you just don't realize it. what aan was trying to say with the shakespeare comment was that the tense really doesn't have anything to do with why dune was so great - the same reason goes for why shakespeare was so great. it had nothing to do with the way he delivered his work - be it in the past or present tense - it was the work itself that held the substance.
to add my 2 bits on this: i agree w/ aan about the immediacy of having it written in the present tense. the whole purpose of shadowmarch was to create a community around a story, to give a breeding ground for discussion around a developing story. so from here tad williams interacted with us - which was great, because how often do you get to speak to the author about what he's just written and what he's going to write in the future? we affected the story. it became our story, in a sense. so it was a present moment sort of deal, something alive and developing with each passing week. it's a small community of tad fans, but i can tell you it was, and still is, a great place to be.
Use M$ windows? Sure, if you're a writer, use M$ windows, use a quill pen, whatever -- just please write well! How much simpler could my message be?
um. i think what aan was saying w/ his M$ windows remark was the whole thing about following the pack. do you simply want to do what everyone else does b/c you don't want to think for yourself? tad does think. he not only researches, as you claim a need for, but he thinks about the way in which the story is being delivered. hence the present tense. the immediacy of it (see above).

um again. aan IS a fan... a big one in fact. he is a frequent poster to the shadowmarch UBB ;D maybe YOU should brush up on your research.
