I had this problem as well with my VPN connection.
It turns out the Cisco soft VPN was just another "interface".
The DNS requests would go out to the regular ISP interface first and
they used to error, so it would use the DNS on the VPN second which worked.
When they no longer returned error, but rather a fake page, I lost the DNS
on my VPN.
The trick is to make the ORDER of interface access such that the VPN connection
is first:
Click on network Connections
Click on advanced
Click on advanced settings
Move your VPN connection to the top of the list.
